Methanization supply strategy: Choose your inputs carefully and comply with standards

Stratégie d'approvisionnement en méthanisation : Bien choisir ses intrants et respecter les normes - Methappro

Getting started with methanisation requires careful consideration of the supply of inputs. A balance between raw materials and compliance with administrative obligations is essential for success. Depending on the types of waste used, regulations can vary considerably.

Regulations: Choosing the right type of materials

If your site chooses to exclusively methanize plant materials, you will be subject to different regulations than sites using livestock effluents or animal by-products. Indeed, the latter require specific treatment, including obtaining health approval.

For animal by-products (ABP) , health approval is essential, and dedicated hygiene equipment will often be necessary to reduce health risks.

Choosing your inputs: List of waste codes

In order to support methanization stakeholders, a list of waste codes has been set up to simplify procurement. These codes are also useful for issuing waste tracking slips. Here are some examples of waste and their associated codes:

Category 02: Agricultural, horticultural and food processing waste

  • 02 01 : Waste from agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture, etc.
    • 02 01 01 : Washing and cleaning sludge
    • 02 01 06 : Feces, urine, manure and effluents
    • 02 01 08 : Hazardous agrochemical waste
    • 02 01 99 : Other unspecified agricultural waste

Category 02 02: Waste from the processing of meat and other animal products

  • 02 02 02 : Animal tissue waste
  • 02 02 04 : Sludge from effluent treatment
  • 02 02 99 : Other processing waste

Category 02 03: Waste from the processing of fruit, vegetables, cereals, etc.

  • 02 03 01 : Sludge from cleaning and peeling
  • 02 03 04 : Materials unfit for consumption
  • 02 03 99 : Other unspecified waste

Category 02 07: Waste from beverage production

  • 02 07 01 : Washing waste and mechanical reduction of raw materials
  • 02 07 05 : Sludge from effluent treatment

Always consult an expert

Before validating the acceptance of certain inputs, it is crucial to consult a methanization expert to ensure that you comply with the health and environmental standards in force.

You can find the full list of waste and its classification on the AIDA website.
