Assessment and future of methanization in France

Bilan et avenir de la méthanisation en France

The first methanization units in France were created in the early 2000s for cogeneration and in 2011 for injection. Since then, the sector has developed and is experiencing growth that seems to be continuing.

Methanization provides solutions in several sectors:

  • The production of renewable energy which contributes to the French and global ecological transition
  • The revaluation of biowaste which reduces its environmental impact: for households, communities and businesses (particularly those in the agri-food industry)
  • An additional source of income for farmers
  • Supporting a local economy by creating local links between methanization sites and neighboring communities/businesses

It is supported by the government, which sets up policies and financial incentives to support its development. The anti-waste law is a good example of this, since it requires any owner of biowaste (household/business/community) to sort it and recycle it in methanization or compost.

As of March 31, 2023, there are nearly 1,600 methanization units in operation in France. 551 are in injection, 1,023 in cogeneration and several hundred others are in the pipeline. The sites are more or less numerous and anchored in the local economic fabric depending on the region - the northern half of France is generally more developed thanks to very active areas such as Alsace or Brittany.

There is still a lot of room for development in methanization in France. Green gas produced by methanizers currently only represents 1% of total gas consumption in France. The objective of the 2015 Energy Transition Act is to reach 10% by 2030 and to continue this progression thereafter.

A good number of indicators seem to be green for the sector to continue to evolve. On the one hand, the number of methanizers and the size of each methanizer tends to increase, which means that the need for raw materials is also growing. On the other hand, waste recovery is increasingly applied, which is changing the nature and volume of materials that are candidates for methanization. New technologies are being developed every day to allow the most complete and optimized management possible of this biowaste (deconditioning, sanitation, etc.).
